Are you one of those people who get horrified just looking at ugly toenails, be they yours or not? The mystery of ugly toenails is hard to crack but the irony is – we don’t want to crack it.
We don’t like to maintain our feet, even though we know we won’t like what they will look like if we ignore them. We pay the entire world’s attention to our fingers but outright ignore the toes.
Fashion too, has added to our ignorance. According to Dr. Rauch, a physical biology and biophysics lecturer at the University of Nottingham says since our feet aren’t as visible and prominent as our hands and fingers, it is no wonder they are often neglected. He also said that fashion has made nails more trendy over the past decade and as long as stylist shoes are in and as long as nails remain in fashion, expect feet to be ignored.
However, he and his team are working on toenail preserving techniques and he feels that it’s not so hard to avoid ingrown toenails.
Ingrown toenails are formed when the sides of our toenails grow into the skin. The most common victim is the big toe, Aka hallux. The skin having being pierced by the nail becomes red and swollen.
Most common causes of ingrown toenails include injuries and cuts. Other causes may be ill fitting shoes and socks as well as sweaty feet. The doc advices victims to never ignore foot care, wear shoes that are neither too tight nor too loose, and most importantly, cut the toenails straight across.
Dr. Rauch sights that the ingrown nails are ‘mismatch’ the growth and adhesion of nails. He adds that it ingrown nails are common among youngsters, adults and even in the elderly people.
Ignoring toenails doesn’t only result in ingrown nails, there are other problems associated with poor toe care like fungi and nail infections.
To avoid ingrown toenail issues along with fungi and others, and to make sure the feet keep looking flawless, never ignore the importance of foot care.
